How can you treat Perioral Dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis is a common skin condition that can be both frustrating and uncomfortable. It is characterized by redness, small bumps, and sometimes mild peeling around the mouth, nose, and sometimes eyes as well. This condition can be persistent and difficult to treat, but with the right approach, it can be managed effectively.

What Causes Perioral Dermatitis?

The exact cause of perioral dermatitis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to a combination of factors. These may include the prolonged use of topical steroids, harsh skincare products, hormonal changes, stress, and even certain dental products. In some cases, it may also be linked to underlying conditions such as rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis.

Some common perioral dermatitis triggers:

  • Ongoing stress
  • Impaired skin barrier
  • Overuse of exfoliants or astringent ingredients
  • Excess essential oils and fragrance
  • Retinoids/vitamin a derivatives
  • Internal deficiencies
  • Infections
  • Gut flora imbalance
  • Topical steroids
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Aggravating toothpaste ingredients (SLS, Fluoride)
  • Spicy foods

How Can Perioral Dermatitis Be Treated?

Treating perioral dermatitis typically involves a multifaceted approach. It is important to identify and eliminate any potential triggers. This can take some time to uncover, and may require additional testing. Your skin specialist may recommend gentle, non-comedogenic skin care products and avoiding the use of topical steroids.

In-clinic treatments may be recommended to manage barrier impairment and inflammation. Whilst there are no treatments to date that directly treat or cure perioral dermatitis, there are a few modalities that can be safely used whilst the skin has flared up, such as LED light therapy, lymphatic enzyme therapy and high frequency.

Additionally, some lifestyle changes may need to be implemented to get the skin under control, and to be able to identify what the specific causes of your PD may be.

Managing Perioral Dermatitis

While treating perioral dermatitis is important, prevention is key to managing this condition in the long term. Avoiding harsh skincare products, minimizing the use of topical steroids, and maintaining a consistent skincare routine can help prevent flare-ups. It is also important to protect your skin from the sun and avoid excessive heat or humidity, as these factors can exacerbate symptoms.

Steps that may need to be taken to manage perioral dermatitis:

  • Stress Management
  • Repairing the skin's microbiome
  • Reducing coffee and caffiene
  • Simplify skincare - avoid pore cloggers, heavy oils and makeup
  • Use mineral based SPF only
  • Avoid harsh ingredients and chemicals (sulfates, alcohol, fragrances)
  • Nutrient dense, and anti-inflammatory whole foods diet
  • Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation
  • Identify what YOUR triggers are
  • Lab testing (blood work, GI map, Dutch testing, etc)
